EDITOR’S NOTE: As we have just added many new readers to our list this year and last, I thought it time to perhaps help you know exactly what TTouch is all about. Below is an overall view of the work and what it comprises.
What is Tellington TTouch?
The Tellington TTouch Method is a unique approach to animal training and care developed by internationally known author and teacher, Linda Tellington-Jones. The foundation of this method is a specific form of body work known as TTouch, which induces a state of relaxation and increased body awareness in animals and people alike. It is based on a philosophy of mutual respect and co-operation and serves as a unique system of nonverbal communication with animals.
Some of the Goals of TTouch
- Influencing positive behavioural, health & training changes
- Promoting well-being through reduction of stress (mind/body connection)
- Deepening the relationship and fostering clear communication between people and animals
- To positively influence the nervous system and cellular function of the body.
The Basic components of TTouch – Overview –
- Observations & Communication
- Body Work, gentle and non-invasive
- TTouch Tools & Equipment
- Bringing awareness to the animal
- Communicate and Influence with equipment
- Groundwork: The TTouch Confidence Course
- Philosophy – Respect each animal as an individual & honour their role as our teachers; encouraging cooperation and trust.
EDITOR’S NOTE: for the next few Newsletters, we will be looking in more detail at each Component!
Why Use TTouch?
Not as a replacement to veterinary care, but as complementary in many situations.
- For an older animal that is in pain (i.e. arthritis, hip dysplasia, etc.)
- Helps injuries and surgery to heal more quickly
It helps animals feel safer and therefore easier to approach.
- Improves behaviour or temperament
To improve your pet’s confidence, balance, agility or performance
- For fear of thunderstorms & loud noises.
It influences behaviour in a positive way.
It can be taught to the animal’s guardians to help improve bonding and well-being.
Aspects of TTouch
- TTouch does not use force, fear or pain in handling, treating or managing animals. These factors block learning, create stress and favour panic related injuries.
- TTouch helps to eliminate fear and pain, to reduce the need for forceful physical restraint and to lessen dependence on risky chemical restraint.
- When animals are overly anxious, they revert to the “Flight or Flight” instinct and learning cannot take place. As Dr. Pamela Reid once said, “The emotions have to be dealt with before you can teach behaviours”
- TTouch is brilliant at dealing with the emotional issues of animals
